Install FFmpeg on Mac

What is FFmpeg? FFmpeg is a command-line tool that allows you to convert virtually any video and audio format to another format. It’s very useful command for convert audio and video files.  I’d like to show you how to install this powerful tool to your Mac. Note that I use MacBook with Snow Leopard inside for this project.

Download MacPorts and install it. MacPorts is a software package that makes the whole process of running free and open source applications under Mac OS X a whole lot simpler by providing a simple command that you can run from the terminal. You can download MacPorts here.

After finishing install MacPorts, open terminal and check if it have been installed correctly by executing:

 $ port help 

Let’s begin to install FFmpeg. First, check if there is a FFmpeg in repositories.

 $ port search ffmpeg 

ffmpeg @0.6 (multimedia)
FFmpeg is a complete solution to play, record, convert and stream audio and
video.

ffmpeg-devel @25102 (multimedia)
FFmpeg is a complete solution to play, record, convert and stream audio and
video.

gst-ffmpeg @0.10.11 (gnome)

This is gst-ffmpeg, a set of plug-ins for GStreamer.

Found 3 ports.

Install FFmpeg

$ port install ffmpeg

Now, ffmpeg has been installed on your Mac. Let’s try to convert a Movie. For this trial, I’d try to convert a movie named andikurnia.avi to andikurnia.mov

Open terminal again, type:

 $ ffmpeg -i andikurnia.avi -b 256k -vcodec h264 -acodec aac andikurnia.mov
